526 Seward Street Fatal Fire Investigation UPDATE

the Capital City Fire Rescue Fire Marshal's Office is conducting a fatal fire investigation with the Juneau Police Department. At this time, the fire is determined to have originated on the second story exterior deck. The actual cause for the fire has not been determined since interviews are still being conducted to assist the fire marshals with reconstructing the fire scene. This fire is believed to be an accidental fire at this time. It is unknown if the next of kin has been contacted in order for the identities of the deceased to be released. The Juneau Police Department will handle those details. The investigation revealed that there was at least one operating smoke alarm inside of the structure which alerted occupants. Capital City Fire Rescue would like to remind everyone the importance of operating smoke alarms. More information will be released as available. The four firefighters that were transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital for smoke inhalation were treated and released and eager to return to work. Submitted by: Fire Marshal Daniel Jager
